CALYPSO
  Racing Team

WELCOME TO THE CALYPSO RACING TEAM WEBSITE!

Our goal is to share the history of the Calypso Racing Team and Region 10 inboard hydroplane racing from the late 50's though the mid-80's, as well as document the restoration of two of the original Calypso hydroplanes.

We'll be continually adding pages, photos*, articles, etc., to this site.  The What's New link will to allow you to quickly see the latest additions and updates.

While browsing these pages, if you see anything that looks incorrect, sparks a memory, or if you have a photo or two that you'd like to share, please contact the webmaster - we'd love to hear from you!

Sincerely,

Calypso Racing Team!

5/08/10: IN PASSING:
Armand Yapachino, the last remaining Charter Member of the Tacoma Inboard Racing Association, and successful inboard hydroplane driver and owner, passed away today.  He was diagnosed with cancer in February, shortly after his 85th birthday.

Armand was a mainstay in Region 10 racing for 45 years, campaigning the Joya Mia hydroplane (first a 280, then a 5-Litre, and currently National Modified) almost his entire career.  Armand's second Joya Mia (below) was formerly the Calypso, which was recently restored.  Armand purchased it in 1971 from John Forbes, and ran it successfully for several years.

His current Joya Mia (below) had won several championships, including 2003 and 2004 with driver Jeff Bernard.

Armand was inducted in to the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame in 2006 for his lifetime of hydroplane achievements.

He was a gentle man with a warm spirit.  He will be sorely missed.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to Joyce and the entire family.
